665 Universities and 35829 colleges in India – these are the numbers revealed by the AISHE [(All India Survey on Higher Education 2012-13 (Provisional)]. The number of students in these institutes is more than 2.9 crores (2,96,29,022 to be precise!)
The Department of Higher Education has been provided Rs.1,10,700 crore for expenditure, as part of the 12th Five Year Plan (2012-2017.) The aim is to achieve an enrolment of 10 million students (including 1 million in open and distance learning) by the end of year 2017. The 12th plan also aims to raise India’s Gross Enrolment Ratio (GER) from 20.4 (2011-12) to 25.2 (2017-18) and touch 30 by 2020.
This information was given in the Rajya Sabha by Minister of State, HRD, Prof. (Dr.) Ram Shankar Katheria.
